It all started with DUBSMASH! Now it truly has created a BIG BIG SMASH which happened in the Philippines and which has broken almost all records!
Dubsmash started way back in November 2014. It is a video messaging application created by Welven Da Great, a social media sensation in the US. With the use of the application, users can choose an audio recording or soundbite from movies, shows, music, and internet trends and record a video of themselves dubbing over that piece of audio.
The application allows users to lip sync over audio clips. Those audio clips may include sections of songs, movies, and famous quotes. Then, users can upload their own audio, and may add color filters and text animation into their recordings. Finally, these users would save their clips into their gadgets and then upload it into FACEBOOK or YOUTUBE! And this was how Maine Mendoza, a twenty-year old pretty lass was eventually discovered.
Nicomaine Dei Capili Mendoza, popularly known as Maine Mendoza was born on March 3, 1995. Now, Maine is a topnotch internet celebrity, comedienne, television personality, commercial model and actress
Maine is best known for her viral Dubsmash videos and her role as Yaya Dub in the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye segment which is being aired every day on weekdays over GMA Network and worldwide via GMA Pinoy TV.
When Maine was born on March 3, 1995, a check as to which songs were popular then, the song of Madonna entitled TAKE A BOW stood out. And here is a segment of the song, which talks of laughter, clowning and an award for a lonely star:
“Make them laugh, it comes so easy
When you get to the part
Where you’re breaking my heart (breaking my heart)
Hide behind your smile, all the world loves a clown
(Just make ’em smile the whole world loves a clown)
Wish you well, I cannot stay
You deserve an award for the role that you played (role that you played)
No more masquerade, you’re one lonely star
(One lonely star and you don’t know who you are)”
But will Maine’s unprecedented success make her end up as a lonely star. I hope it would not end that way as Maine’s popularity truly has broken almost all records.
After Maine was accidentally paired with Alden Richards forming the love team AlDub, the ratings of Eat Bulaga spiraled to an unprecedented HIGH! Thereafter, the duo’s popularity (i.e. Maine and Alden) became phenomenal.
Maine was born and raised in the municipality of Santa Maria in the province of Bulacan in the Philippines to Mary Ann and Teodoro Mendoza. She has two brothers and two sisters. All of the names of her siblings start with “Nico” (Nicolette Ann, Nicoleen Dyann, Nicolas Dynn and Nicodeim Dean).
Maine finished her elementary education at St. Paul School of Sta. Maria and high school at St. Paul College of Bocaue. She completed a bachelor’s degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management major in Culinary Arts at De La Salle-College of St. Benilde. She had her on-the-job training for her profession at The Sagamore in Bolton Landing, New York.
In the early part of 2015, Maine’s career took off after she began posting Dubsmash compilation on Facebook. A compilation in which she impersonates Kris Aquino, the sister of current President Noynoy Aquino of the Philippines, went viral with one million views overnight. This earned her the title “Queen of Dubsmash” in the Philippines and opened several opportunities for Maine. Maine had the opportunity to collaborate with many other Dubsmashers and meet Kris Aquino herself. Subsequently, she was casted as Yaya Dub, the maid of Lola Nidora (portrayed by Filipino comedian Wally Bayola), on Eat Bulaga’s “Juan For All, All For Juan” segment. Maine first appeared on July 4, 2015. Maine’s character, Yaya Dub, was paired accidentally with fellow Eat Bulaga co-host Alden on July 16, 2015, in a romantic-comedy sketch part of the show entitled Kalyeserye; the couple became popularly known as “AlDub“. It has been bruited about that what actually was a mere 2-week contract which was executed by Maine to serve as filler for the supposed absence of the original nurse maid of Lola Nidora (which nurse-maid role was actually played by Wally Bayola too), got unendingly extended. And it would seem that the contract has now been certainly extended indefinitely.
Maine and Alden are set to appear in a 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival entry entitled My Bebe Love. The film which stars Vic Sotto and Ai-Ai de las Alas was directed by Jose Javier Reyes. My Bebe Love is Maine’s film debut and she plays the part of Anna Carillo, the stubborn and rebellious child of Vic Sotto’s character as a debonair and glamorous businessman.
But what is the main core for Maine’s allure and enticement?
As it stands now, Yaya Dub, the screen name of Maine, has enticed not only the C,D, and E strata of Philippine society to continuously watch the Filipino noontime show EAT BULAGA especially its AlDub Kalyeserye segment. Even the A and B classes of Philippine society have virtually been seduced to watch the show. Plausibly, goaded by curiosity, the initial compulsion is merely to check on what has kept people so glued and almost captivated and titillated watching the show.
Others, like those first time viewers who would at first blush consider the show corny and would perceive the somewhat shallow character of the Filipino humor, would eventually realize that laughter is indeed contagious. They would soon realize that the adage: “LAUGH AND THE WHOLE WORLD LAUGHS WITH YOU!”, is true.
But the more compelling reason is that those netizens in the whole Philippine archipelago who nurture the dream to become a future social media sensation, continuously muse and visualize with overflowing hope and optimism that someday they will become like Maine too. Indeed, all and sundry have identified themselves with Maine.
After the never-ending commercial advertisement stints where the duo, Maine and Alden, are featured, the phenomenon has even became much grandiose. Talks have it that McDonald has now overtaken Jollibee, which has been the perennial market leader in the the burger and snack-foods division of the food industry. All the more, the continuing race as the Philippine number one burger and snack-foods outlet in the industry has heated up. This phenomenal “change-favor” status was scored by MacDonald just now, after it engaged the services of the duo, Maine and Alden, in their newest TV commercials. The owners of 555 sardines, a modestly known brand of sardines in the Philippine market, too are very much elated as regards the bullish market showing of their product after it reached record-high sales in the market.
What was truly amazing was the show’s monumental feat of filling up to the rafters the 55,000 seater Philippine Arena when EAT BULAGA’s noontime show was aired live at the mammoth arena, the biggest indoor arena in the world on October 24, 2015. This colossal gathering in Bocaue, Bulacan where the arena sits, is just about a couple of kilometers away from Maine’s birthplace in Santa Maria, Bulacan. The said gathering registered too, a record high of 41 million tweets. Earlier, during the October 19, 2015 showing of EAT BULAGA which featured the first meeting of Maine and Alden in the FLESH, which was dubbed as AlDub’s FIRST DATE, the show’s segment registered a record 40 per cent rating in National Urban Philippines according to market research firm, AGB Nielsen Philippines. What has become a nobler achievement by the AlDub show is its having been awarded by the CBCP, an acronym which stands for the Catholic Bishop Conference in the Philippines with the Catholic Social Media award for the show’s diligent efforts in reviving Christian values which people tend to forget from the past.
Of late, it has been bruited about that the duo (i.e. Maine and Alden) will appear as guests at the ELLEN DEGENERES show following an invitation from Ellen DeGeneres herself. Also, grapevine news has it that a politician has dangled a Php 100 Million offer to Yaya Dub and his AlDub partner, Alden. But the corporate entity which manages Yaya Dub has sort of politely refused the offer citing the need to make Yaya Dub apolitical. But the politician is so persistent and is willing to raise the ANTE. Will Yaya Dub and/or her talent manager give in to this enticing offer? We will by then know if Maine would end up as a lonely star from the lyrics of Madonna’s aforesaid song. But all signs point to a conclusion that Maine will rise up even higher as a truly meteoric star!
As in the Philippines, we would be wont to say: SUNDAN ANG SUSUNOD NA KABANATA! [English translation: LET’S WATCH FOR THE NEXT EPISODE!]
